Historic — Kabylia Officially Proclaims Its Independence
PARIS, FRANCE (SIWEL) — Kabylia officially proclaimed its independence from Algeria on Sunday, December 14, 2025, in Paris. Gathered before a large audience that included foreign delegations, leading figures of the Movement for the Self-Determination of Kabylia (MAK) and the Kabyle Government in Exile (Anavad) solemnly announced the birth of a new State: the Federal Republic of Kabylia.
Despite pressure, attempts at obstruction, and maneuvers by the Algerian regime aimed at preventing the event from taking place, the ceremony went ahead as planned, save for a last-minute change of venue, held in Paris instead of Versailles. In an atmosphere both solemn and historic, the Declaration of Independence was publicly proclaimed by President Ferhat Mehenni, marking a major turning point in the contemporary history of the Kabyle people.
The choice of December 14 was not accidental. It directly refers to the adoption, on December 14, 1960, of United Nations General Assembly Resolution 1514 (XV), the landmark text affirming the right of colonized peoples to self-determination and laying the foundations of the universal process of decolonization. By placing its proclamation within this symbolic and legal framework, Kabylia affirms the decolonial nature of its démarche.
Through this founding political act, Kabylia formally brings to an end more than a century and a half of subjugation imposed without its consent and asserts its existence as a sovereign nation. The designation Federal Republic of Kabylia was chosen to reflect the will to establish a State based on democracy, decentralization, and respect for fundamental freedoms.
This proclamation comes amid heightened repression in Kabylia, where any political expression related to self-determination is systematically criminalized by the Algerian authorities. It is also intended as a message to the international community: the Kabyle question fully falls within the right of peoples to self-determination, as recognized by international law.
With this declaration, Kabylia enters a new phase of its political struggle—the construction and recognition of a free, sovereign, and democratic State.
